Richard E. Harrison

Richard is a litigator with a focus on environmental conservation and general litigation.

On the environmental side, Richard acts for parties seeking to maintain environmental initiatives and promote conservation, including, landowners, environmental groups and conservationists. His practice focuses on:

  • Wetland preservation;

  • Largescale landscape conservation; and

  • Development opposition.

Richard does act for proponents, primarily Hutterite Colonies, ensuring the work is environmentally sound. His advocacy has brought him in front of all Alberta Courts and the Federal Court of Canada. He frequently appears before various tribunals, including the:

  • Environmental Appeals Board;

  • Land and Property Rights Tribunal;

  • Municipal councils;

  • Subdivision and Development Appeal Boards;

  • Environment and Protected Areas;

  • Alberta Energy Regulator; and

  • Natural Resources Conservation Board.

As a civil litigator, Richard frequently acts as a custodian on behalf of the Law Society of Alberta. Outside his custodial work, Richard’s experience lies in the following areas:

  • Debt collection, fraudulent conveyances and creditors’ rights;

  • Defamation;

  • Fraud and fraudulent misrepresentation; and

  • Employment law.

In both practice areas, environmental law and civil litigation, Richard is considered a tough and aggressive litigator. He holds parties opposite him to account and moves his clients’ matters forward with diligence and speed.

Community & Professional Involvement

Richard is involved in a number of capacities both inside and outside the legal profession. Within the legal community, Richard teaches Administrative Law at the University of Calgary and is formerly a faculty member with the Legal Education Society of Alberta. Richard was a former section chair for the Canadian Bar Association and former Case Law Review and Legislative Review for the Canadian Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section.

Outside the legal community, Richard is a member of First Assembly Church and is a Board Member with Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative. He is blessed with a wife and three children who spend as much time as possible hiking, backpacking, traveling, skiing and camping outside.
